Former United States men’s national team striker Brian McBride assesses Josh Sargent’s ceiling for club and country. McBride says Sargent is already making his mark after starting in two of Werder Bremen’s first three games in the Bundesliga. McBride is also bullish on Sargent’s USMNT future, citing his hard work in getting back into Gregg Berhalter’s 26-man squad for the USMNT’s September friendlies after missing out on the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

  1. The title is code for not bringing Jozy Altidore back anymore. I agree! Let's move on from the old guard and let the new blood settle in.

  2. Can we stop hyping American players? Puilisic has come to the Premier League and looks a normal player, nothing special. Now they are hyping this player who has done nothing in a very weak bundesliga. The US will not produce world class players until they get rid of the pay to play system.

  3. Honestly. I might have to go to America and school these coaches and pundits about football. This Sargent lad is nothing special. A bit like pulisic, not bad but nothing out of his world

  4. mexico will prob do what italy did and tackle sargent to the ground as many times as they could to prevent him from doing any damage to their gameplan

  5. I really don't know what all these Europeans in this comment section are talking about. I really don't see where Brian McBride is 'hyping him up' I mean does anyone think the US old guys are gonna get the job done against Mexico's best team? Pfft

  6. for all the comments freaking out saying they are overhyping josh sargent calm down all they are saying is he is the future of the us mens national team not that he is the future world class star

  7. Europeans and others, we are merely talking about our young players that have potential like you do. We’re not even hyping them up as if they’re the best in the world. We just think they’re good for our standards and that’s it. They don’t get much media coverage around the world at all anyways (besides Pulisic) so why not talk about them on an American channel? I don’t see why we are being scolded at in the comments here

  8. Werder Bremen is a star fabrication club, not a final destination, let's not talk as if he already made it if he succeeds there or something!!! The true question is: will he develop enough, quickly enough for a TOP club to buy him while he's still young?

  9. 1. I hate zardes, I think he just stands around and if he scores it’s a total fluke.
    2. I’m upset altoride isn’t on the squad, I know he is older but compared to zardes he is better and his last few mls matches he has been performing.
    3. I do like Sargent, I watched him play live vs Jamaica earlier in the year and he has a lot of fight to him he just needs service and I think if pulisic sets him up tonight he will be scoring!

  10. And look what happened to last nights results. Get rid of the old bring in the new. Line up was wrong, coaching was bad, Pulisic was the only one playing. This was a redemption game and it turned out to be a comedy show !

  11. There was a time when I watched our national team and said the future is bright, because we always seemed to be improving, albeit slowly and a bit inconsistently. That all crashed down in 2017.

These days the future is uncertain at best, bleak at worst. From the head coach to the bench players, nothing about the USMNT inspires confidence anymore.

    That’s sad.

  12. Unfortunately, coaching is still from the old guard. We may need to wait another generation untill US talent is fully exploited at the International level.
