Manchester City expert Steven McInerney from Esteemed Kompany shares his thoughts on Rodri’s latest injury setback, with the midfielder coming off in the first half of the Citizens’ 1-0 Premier League win at Brentford with a minor hamstring tweak.
Rodri, who has since withdrawn from the Spain squad ahead of World Cup qualifiers and Georgia and Bulgaria this month, is not expected to return to his very best until next summer’s international tournament, according to City manager Pep Guardiola, so can the Citizens still mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title this season?

Rodri will never get back to his previous level. At 29 he is already well past his physical prime, and now has had a year off to recover from a ruptured ACL. The challenge for him would be just to get through a game without injuring himself. He will never have the speed, strength , confidence & endurance he had previously. MC had better get used to playing Nico G and getting him up to speed. If Rodri plays in the future he will be largely a passenger. It is yet another example of a serious injury cutting short a great player's career.
I ruptured my ACL at 29 at the time I was playing football twice a week, rugby twice a week, golf four times and also squash. I doubt I could have been any more active without being a full time athlete. My rupture was caused by a car accident, totally unrelated to my active lifestyle. Without taking too much time explaining the repair, the graft is taken from your hamstrings, they are tendons and therefore don’t have blood coursing through them like a ligament, effectively your explanation is broadly correct. Unfortunately you inevitably cause muscular issues moving forward, I’m now 57 and on occasion I still feel like I’m walking on someone else’s knee! In addition I suffer from regular thigh strains and groin injuries from carrying out the simplest of tasks like walking up or downstairs! Hopefully he will actually get back to his best, 90% of the issues will be mental, fingers crossed he’ll overcome these
Hamstring injury the following season after ACL tear is super common
Nico G needs to step up so Rodri not playing doesn’t cause a problem
