      I remember when he was our centre back in the early 2010's. It was obvious to all Groningen fans that the dude was really fucking good and had tons of potential, but the top clubs in the country just didn't seem to see it or not want to see it. I remember being so confused as to why Ajax and PSV were so hesitant to buy him and when Celtic did i thought they got an absolute bargain. Even when he was performing great in the Champions League with Celtic, the Dutch analists and national coach were apparantly not impressed and only started taking him seriously after he moved to Southampton. Even when he was on top of the game, some analists were still very critical about him. I never really understood it and still don't

      Dutchie here. I remember that during Van Dijks period in Scotland, the Dutch analyst cried out we had now good defenders. But Pierre Van Hooijdonk constantly said: we must select Van Dijk in our national team! We do have good defenders! Only the the KNVB (the Dutch football union) and the coaches just would'nt select him. Only when he went to Liverpool and Koeman became our national coach, he was selected. Koeman knew how good he was, he brought him to Southhampton. The former coaches, Van Marwijk, Hiddink ans Blind did'nt select him. While all the time the Dutch analisyst said: put him in de Dutch national team! When Advocaat became, again coach, he did select him but it was too late. We did'nt make the World Cup in Russia. Van Gaal saw his potential but by then. Van Dijk was already playing at Liverpool. Now with Koeman as our national coach he finally gets the recognition he deserves. He's one of the best defenders in the world. But it took a long time for Dutch coaches to see it… I'll never forgive Pickford though. He cost Van Dijk 3 years to get him back to his level when he was a contender for the Ballon D'Or..

      The thing with Virgil is if you see him tracking a forward, you know that forward won't score. And he doesn't do it by attacking them, he just shadows them and won't let them shoot. It's really impressive. His confidence in his own ability must really unsettle people.

      I don't think I've seen a smoother defender than VVD. Rolls Royce is an apt description. If he's not the best CB in PL history, he's at least in the conversation. He's incredible.

      Remember that Frenkie de jong did go for 1 euro to ajax but also a 15% sell on clause so they got 7,5M ajax would never pay that to a player from willem 2 so it was a great deal
