  1. It will be called soccer worldwide eventually. Europe takes their lead from North America. Soccer has changed because of it already. I remember as a kid if the ball went out of bounds the sideline official would point to the team with possession. Last few decades they point to the direction of defender's net, just like NBA and MAN's football, because North America demanded it and Europe caved. VAR wouldn't be in soccer if North America didn't use it in other sports. There is talk of doing away with a 90 min running clock and extra time and go to 60 min stop time, and it will eventually happen because North America wants it to.

  2. Actually, the term "soccer" was originally coined by the Brits in the 1800s. At the time, football was used to describe both rugby and what we now know as European football. Eventually, to differentiate the two, rugby football became "rugger", and then rugby, while association football became "soccer".

  3. It wasn't long ago that in Britain, "soccer" and "football" were used in about the same frequency. "Soccer" comes from "association football", shortened to "assoccer" and then eventually just "soccer". Basically, the word has its roots in the country that claims to have invented the modern game.
