Does Wayne think he was better than Michael Owen at 17?

Wayne, Kelly and Kae discuss Owen’s recent comments on the latest episode. Wayne gives his response and reveals what it was like playing alongside Owen and what he’s really like behind closed doors.

Wayne also takes us inside the colourful world of the Louis van Gaal era at Manchester United. He explains where he thinks he was better than Sir Alex, what it was like when everyone knew Van Gaal was being sacked after the 2016 FA Cup Final and reveals the incredible comment the Dutchman made the first time he met Coleen.

There’s also some chat about which reality show Wayne would do – and the one thing that might put him off it, why Roy Hodgson wanted a statue in Malmo, and Wayne gives his verdict on England’s win over Andorra and declares whether he’d ever want to be an international manager.

The Michael Owen debate and was Louis van Gaal better than Fergie? | The Wayne Rooney Show

  1. Kae saying I would show Owen my Trophies…Owen would just pop that Ballon Dor on Rooneys lap 😂😂. Team trophies mean sod all when comparing individual abilities

  2. The shock on people's faces when you tell them fergie wasnt good tactically😂….what tactics! The european games really showed it. Some awful exits. Even the 2 we won, were very lucky. Played off the park in the first one, after a good start in the second hanging on. Never able to control games.

  3. Honestly these interviews with Wayne are class him comes across so normal (like the rest of us) the way he speaks about football and ex players is full of respect, Rooney top man from an arsenal fan

  4. There was never any 3-4 year period where Michael Own was the best CF in the world. From '94 to '99, the best CF in the world, coincidentally, the best player in the world, was either Romario or Ronaldo. When Ronaldo was injured, I'm still not sure Own was actually the best CF in the world.

  5. As a Liverpool fan I can tell you honestly I hate him for joining United, I’ll never forgive that BUT

Rooney had a much better career.

My first hero as a kid was Owen, at 17/18 he was better than Rooney, and I don’t think it’s a conversation
He was so good that Real Madrid got him whilst they had R9 and Raul
He was part of THAT Galactictos side.
    Injuries ruined his footballing legacy
That move to United ruined his Liverpool legacy.

But he’s hilarious, the throwing the apple in the bin story is class

  6. Owen was very dependent on pace and as result of injuries his pace and career were in decline after 24. While Rooney lifesytle shortened hs peak he was more multidimensional and a far more skillful player who sustained a high level for much longer.

  7. As a Liverpool fan growing up in the 90s/00s we idolised Owen we all wanted to be him and Fowler he was special when he come through sadly he was overplayed and his injuries killed him by the time he was 24 Rooney was unbelievable when he come through at Everton an uninjured Owen and prime Rooney would have been special

  8. Hard to argue with Owen on most things he stated as he was phenomenal …. for 3-4 years , but saying no other teen/young player could do what he's done when Messi was obviously elite at similar age aswell and Wayne had an almost parallel rise as Owen did , what kills Owen in the greatest debate chat is not doing it over a decade or so like most of the greats , his personal awards though should be a reminder how good he was , i have to say look at the others in contention for the golden boot and ball'on dor the years he won it was not the strongest years to pick from

  9. Rooney so humble .. what a player best player I seen in a blue shirt he was unbelievable . What a player . I seen him for Everton under 14s playing Blackburn rovers under 14 he ran the show he stood out a mile

  10. Kudos to Wayne for not getting swayed by the rubbish media and biased fanbase. Two titans with enormous respect for each other… and for those in their late 30s or older, you WILL remember michael owen for 2- 3 years was the best. Wayne was inspired by him. Nothing to compare.

  11. Wazza is Wazza. No ego. He just wanted to play football and shag grannies. Genuinely top bloke and hugely underrated as a player. Crazy he's United's all time top scorer and if I'm not mistaken was England's as well at some point. Probably the most unselfish player I've ever seen given the magnitude of his talent. But I'm a fan first and foremost and if we're talking 17 year old talents I'm taking Michael. Rooney was scarily complete at 17 but Michael was devastating.
