What an incredible time we had at StriperQuest! It was a day full of determination, teamwork, and a whole lot of striped bass
With record-breaking numbers, this year’s StriperQuest was our largest expedition yet. There were 25 teams and 125 anglers, captains, and mates coming together in the name of science for our third annual Striped Bass tagging competition. The bite was red-hot, the fish cooperated, and our teams were ready. Together, we tagged and released over 300 striped bass and deployed five satellite tags—a new benchmark for our study!
This year we introduced the MicroPAT satellite tag from Wildlife Computers—this state-of-the-art tracking device is designed to study smaller class fish. Unlike previous years where we tagged larger class fish (40-inch+), this new technology will allow us to study our 29-inch striped bass candidate to compare migration patterns to our past larger class fish. Our tags are programmed for five months, and we can’t wait to see where these fish travel.
The heart of StriperQuest is the spirit of friendly competition mixed with a drive for conservation. Teams from across the region—and some from across the country—joined us again, including returning champions and enthusiastic newcomers. The crew of Tom Streahle, Ryan Anderson, Michael Zedek and Missy Alcorn took top honors in the StriperQuest tournament component, as the “Ol Dirty Basser Crew” limited out on 25 Gray Fishtag Research tags, which tied their team with teams from Rockfish Smarty and Fisher Price Sportfishing. Tom, Ryan, Michael and Missy caught and released the first fish of the day though to break the tie, and went on to win the Calcutta for largest catch and release of the day at 47-1/2 inches.
A big thank-you to our amazing sponsors! We are always amazed by the generosity and energy of our sponsors—and 2025 was no exception. From product-filled buckets to incredible raffle prizes, they truly made the event one to remember. PLUS, all our sponsors paid the entry fee and were competing fishing aboard either their own pro-staff boats or local chartered vessels.
