Hello all.
Welcome to my new strand, The Guillem Balague Podcast.

In this first episode I spend time with England Manager, Gareth Southgate. Together we discuss everything – his career as a player, his time as a youth player on the verge of the first team, his responsibilities as a young captain and his former clubs. We also discuss music, film and what he does in his spare time. Plus, of course, his hopes for the coming World Cup and beyond.

Let me know what you think, leave your comments below. And also tell me who you’d like to hear from.

Like, subscribe and turn on the notifications.

See you all soon.

  1. Gareth Southgate has already done the job far better than the last 4 England managers combined so far. This England team is the strongest tactical squad in ages. I personally feel that they are targeting the Euro 2020 as their realistic target and the World Cup 2018 will serve as the base learning experience. A quarter final run would be a success based on that layout.

  2. This is a great podcast. Just found it following England's 6-1 win over Panama. I have always liked Southgate, but this podcast I think shows him to be a top guy, especially with regards to his family life etc (no pictures of his football life at home, 'just dad' etc).
Seems to have a really logical brain, and is very calm and intelligent.
I liked how after today's 6-1 he played down the excitement somewhat. The media are going to say we will now win the World Cup, etc, but Gareth did a good job staying positive rightly so, but also that he is looking for more.

  3. This lets make you think of the wotk ethic lost in football today. How these players had to make their way the hard way mentally and physically. They were taught by their set backs to be humble an strong enough mentally to pursue their dreams. Only real people can come through that, more so if your not as gifted as some others. Gareth Southgate is such a level headed positive person you can see why he's achieved what he did. Great interview guillem asked some very thought provoking questions for Gareth.

  4. Guillem: One thing has struck me during your interview with Gareth… It was mentioned that alot of the current England squad (Kane, Lingard, Maquire, Pickford etc) had knock backs on their path to an England enlistment. Previous England squads were accused of being overpaid prima donnas – which is no doubt true. But I wonder if this squad are gelling together so well because they are grateful for GETTING this opportunity as opposed to EXPECTING it..?

  5. Good interview thanks. I think Dennis Bergkamp would be a fascinating interview, simply because he was a genious yet fairly quiet and enigmatic.

  6. This was an outstandingly good interview. Very insightful and fascinating. How I haven't found your podcasts before is beyond me.

I shall now look for any other interviews you have done and hope to enjoy them as much as I did this one.

    Well done and thank you.

  7. I would recommend you to make a series of interviews with football agents and middlemen (so called third parties), the way they choose and promote players, how the transfers are done… this is big part of modern football, I’m sure there are lot of interesting facts and stories to be uncovered …

  8. Hi Guillem, this is the only genuine interview about Southgate out there. You need to have exceeded millions of views.

I think that with a slight change of the video packaging, you could get thousands of views extra. For example, I watch your videos regularly but thought that this one is just a podcast ABOUT Southgate. The norm nowadays is that if Southgate is in the podcast, he is on the video thumbnail. Also maybe the title should say something like: Interview WITH southgate. That would have made me click months ago!

    Brillant work actually!

  9. Loved it!! How about the likes of Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta, Pogba, Ole (Man Utd), Salah, Pep Guardiola etc… English subtitles plz for other non-English speaking players.

  10. Absolutely outstanding interview. All the more interesting watching it almost a year after the World Cup in Russia, and seeing what Southgate wanted to achieve in action. Also, the opportunity to hear him speak more in-depth about his life and career, and about his philosophies. Really enjoyed it

  11. Love your questions. Very interesting. Some of which solve some of my own mysteries. I do wonder now how when he was researching and learning around 2009-2011 whether he knew how he wanted to revolutionise the FA and thought he could do it. All of that fed into what would later become the 'England DNA' and his own philosophy which now underpins both the England team, the entire FA and anyone being coached in football in England.
