Germany’s dreams were dashed in the UEFA Nations League (UNL) semi-final as they failed to defend their lead, crashing out 2-1 in their first defeat to Portugal for 25 years. Now the Germans face the slight embarrassment of going for the bronze medal as the host nation in Stuttgart’s MHPArena, although Julian Nagelsmann has stated that this tournament is a “good learning experience” and may choose to experiment in the continued absence of a number of key players.
Facing France could well prove to be a positive for Germany as they head into this match having beaten them twice since their last competitive meeting in the Euro 2020 group stage, also scoring in all four halves across those two encounters. The latest of those H2Hs was just Nagelsmann’s second win in the job, and he has not lost back-to-back games in the hot seat since then, so may well expect a response here.
Despite losing in their semi-final, France salvaged some pride as they rallied from 5-1 down to leave Spain clinging on for an eventual 5-4 victory to avenge the French triumph in the 2021 UNL final. That means that manager Didier Deschamps’ last opportunity to lift a trophy with Les Bleus before his scheduled departure will be the 2026 FIFA World Cup, allowing this bronze-medal game to serve as extra preparation.
Having lost two of their last three matches, France are at risk of suffering two consecutive defeats for just the second time since doing so in June 2015. Some may therefore be expecting a big reaction here, given that three of France’s previous four losses since the beginning of 2024 were followed up by them scoring at least twice in wins over respectable opponents Chile, Belgium and Croatia.
Players to watch: Coveted Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz got Germany’s only goal in the semi-final against Portugal, meaning that he has now netted four times in his last four UNL appearances on home soil. Lyon’s Rayan Cherki enjoyed a dream senior debut for France on Thursday, scoring and assisting against Spain, meaning that he has contributed to goals in seven of his last ten games for club and country.
