Despite previously agreeing a contract with Arsenal, Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia is close to joining Newcastle for £20m. Garcia, described as “one of the best” goalkeepers, has a release clause active this summer. This move comes after Arsenal failed to sign him last year and leaves Aston Villa needing a replacement for Emiliano Martinez. Newcastle aims to secure Garcia as a successor to Nick Pope.
