The red-card fallout continues on the ESPN FC panel, as Stewart Robson, Shaka Hislop, Steve Nicol and Don Hutchison break down the game-changing tackle that saw Remo Freuler sent off vs. Real Madrid. Robson contends the referee used his instincts on his viewpoint of the challenge and isn’t bothered that it may not have been by the letter of the law. Hutchison, Hislop and Nicol feel that Freuler made no attempt for the ball whatsoever so the referee was left with no choice but to send off the Atalanta defender.

Well the ref was a real Madrid fan simple as that
So one day is up to the Var and the next is up to the ref instincts? Ridiculous
People… It was not an obvious goal scoring opportunity. The secret lies in Mendy's last touch right before he was tackled. This does not go under Law 12(denying a goal or obvious goal opportunity).
I think it’s a red card but Robson is 💯 right about allowing Refs to make their decisions based on their perspective and feel for the game. Laws of the game leave it up to the ref to make a decision. I can see how people can believe it was a goal scoring opportunity and I can see why people say it wasn’t. Ref made the call move on.
Anyone who’s played competitive sports knows different refs may call things differently. Some games you know this ref will allow more physical play then others and players adjust accordingly. Robson’s right about allowing the ref to use their judgment.

F@!k Real Madrid
Look, I am gonna explain this. According to the rules, there are 4 things the referee must check in this situation to give a red card.
1-Distance between the offence and the goal.
2-General direction of play.
3-Likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball.
4-Location of the defenders OR the number of defenders.
The distance wasn't much far and it was a clear opportunity to score so we can cross the first two out. Since Mendy was behind the player and no defender was there in front of him the likelihood of him gaining the ball if not fouled is 100%. Thus that checks the third one out. Now the constant arguments the people seem to say is that Freuler wasn't the last man, but again it is stated in the 4th one that the location of the defenders must be taken to account as well and he was distant from Mendy. Hence that crosses the 4th point out as well. Thus we can say that the referee's decision was correct and although it might be harsh, you cannot say it's wrong.
You guys need to take away the fact that Mendy isn't a goal scorer if he had the finishing ability of messi you guys would say a red is fair because he would have gotten a shot off there's no question about that .
It wasn't a red obviously anyone who sees it as a red is clueless…. the rules needs to be changed , guys it was red carded because any 1v1 and if you foul someone like that it's a red regardless.. so but technically speaking.. was it worth the red? no it wasn't it should've been yellow and a foul that's it. the rules are dumb.
Morons in the comments debating about whether he would've scored it or not smh
That doesn't matter, he was 1v1 with the keeper and was denied a clear shot on goal
Hence, the RED CARD

Do this guys know the difference between a foul and game contrast?
It is still not a red card in my view.
Yet they're not talking about play before the red card where the Atalanta keeper kicked Vinicius on his upper thigh and got away with it, it was also outside the penalty box and should've been a straight red. Bias and controversy at its finest 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
The last man was miles away and freuler denied a clear goal opportunity
Red card was well deserved
This is red card?!? Never…
F..off espn you bias pricks not a red at all I bet if it was the other way around the ref wouldn't of blinked any eye lid.
Madrid referees team
Every referees need to have instinct:
Var: oh ok so f**k you!
It's real madrid baby…r.i.p.-referee in pocket…
