  1. I'm not English, but from the outside looking in I can't understand why anyone would defend Southgate. Nice guy, good man management and great job transitioning younger players into the senior squad.

Not a winner, though. He doesn't have the tactical nous, or the bravery to take risks. England have a fantastic squad, and are more than capable of winning one of these tournaments. They fall short whenever they meet a side ranked close to them, and that's on Gareth.

  2. Heโ€™s done as expected. But whenever faced with an opponent stronger or a team that we might not be favourites to beat, he always crumbled. Heโ€™s done a good job, no doubt, but he hasnโ€™t done anything special either.

  3. GS posed the lack of a days prep as an excuse. He said players were not fit – but still picked them despite having talent on the bench. Took youngsters and said that they were too inexperienced to throw on in games, but they are superb at their clubs – so why take them?

He took them as they wouldnโ€™t challenge him, the lads left behind would?

Why wasnโ€™t he screaming on the touch line to attack? Why the late subs on when it was clear the team on the pitch wasnโ€™t working? Itโ€™s because heโ€™s a poor coach, simple.

Coasted along making everything all nice and fluffy, safe for players, great! But won nothing.

    5/10 from me.

  4. I'm sorry but he's failed, the amount of important games we have lost going 1-0 up then sitting back and inviting pressure EVERY FUยฃKING GAME! Is infuriating!

Not getting the best out of world class players, when they do it week week out for there clubs! Playing players in the wrong position and not making changes at the right times is unbelievable!

    Failed failed FAILED!!

  5. Southgate is as lacklustre as it gets. Sure we fluked our way to second place twice, but we had some of the easiest draws possible and a very talented set of players. We have no discernible style of play, he has no tactics at all, no plan B, no substitutional awareness, and picks his favourites as opposed to who gets results when they play. I feel any half decent manager who knows how to coach a squad into a style would outcompete him handily with the same set of players.

  6. England's tournament footballwise was particularly bad, I know. It was bewildering. However, Southgate is not the only one to present us with dull football and poor subs.
    Hodgson- Turgid
    Capello- Turgid
    McClaren- Turgid
    Sven- Overly defensive
You have to go back to Hoddle and Venables for good attacking English football.

  7. Southgate deserves more credit than he's getting. Him bringing the players together is the only reason we managed to get to two finals and a world cup semi. We've had better squads in the past that achieved nothing. If the next manager wins anything he has southgate to thank.

  8. I hope you don't take this message as a provocation, but as an external comment. Whether England wins or loses, frankly it doesn't affect me at all. It's just a personal observation.

I was taught that the foundation for progressing in life lies in conducting a serious self-analysis. I perceive a lot of entitlement and delusion in an Englishman who does not consider Southgate as the second best coach in history. To me, if you want to write history, you need to comprehend history.

If the English benchmark for failure is not lifting a trophy, logic states that you have literally failed every time in your centennial history except for 1966 (and let's not talk about that slightly controversial victory). For better or worse, with rather favourable brackets of course, Southgate has led you to a World Cup semifinal (one out of three) and two European finals (two out of two).

I am Italian, and I am a nobody to lecture or moralise you: our current football is in a pitiful state compared to yours.
But if we speak historically, nations like Germany or Italy could afford not to consider a Southgate among their top coaches. An Italian with two lost European finals would statistically be the sixth/seventh in our history. Not for England.

Even before tactical analyses and blaming the coach and players, in my opinion, the *step to take is to make a serious assessment of who you are historically*, how important it is for you to have reached two finals, to understand the mistakes made, and to start again with humility and courage (which you lacked). Only by knowing who you are will you be able to understand how to seize opportunities.

  9. He's been extremely lucky with draws and big teams misfiring.
He's been horrendous. What planet do these pundits live on .
The football and game management have been as bad as Steve Bruce and the wolly with the brolly.
He set us out in the European championship the way Steve Bruce set up Newcastle, defensive horse manure, but even cabbage heed got better out of the players, and we weren't a good team .
Best team on paper by far, but this fool sapped the life out of the players
Think these pundits forget to take their tablets before they speak ….

  10. I rate Andy 3 out odf 10 – the guy is clueless by saying England managers are only successfull if they win – well he will remain disapointed for the rest of his life as England will never win with the fans and press toxity – Southgate 9/10 just did not get the luck in his 2 finals – like Engalnd did in 66 with a goal being given that never crossed the line

  11. Andy Townsend epitomises what, until recently, England has been all about accepting, mediocrity!
It's only in the last few years that the vast majority no longer accept failure and second place as being 'did well'.

In fact, SAFEgate progressed (not achieved) England further in more competitions than even Sir Alf Ramsay, but has won NOTHING!

  12. We laugh at arsenal in the last 2 years but keep the same energy for Gareth. Iโ€™m sorry but getting to a final is not an achievement only a loosing mentality would think itโ€™s something to brag about. Even Greece won ffs. Itโ€™s all about what you win not how you harmonised a nation (which you didnโ€™t either)

  13. Gareth Southgate record, finished fourth 2018 World Cup, quarter-final World Cup 2022, runners up in Euro Final 2020 and 2024. How is this a bad record? Has anyone ever considered the fact that maybe many England players are overrated? Ever considered the fact that the pundits and the media often exaggerate England's chances?

  14. he achieved one outstanding result in his reign which was the 3-2 vs Spain in the Nations League.

he hasn't achieved an outstanding result aside from that. Every other top nation we haven't beaten… the reason we've gotten to the latter stages of tournaments is because of the runs we've had to get there. We've got hugely fortunate with draws and STILL not got over the line

  15. Not so much a Freudian slip of the tongue by Goldstein there. He actually still believes England should be beating Croatia, Italy, France and Spain on every single occasion. The English mentality is a strange pathetic mindset. Yet their country is now ruled by outsiders and they don't care???

  16. Football fans in the UK want to watch exciting and fast attacking football from both their club sides and national team!!!! And of course they want to see winners all the time and winning coaches, that is what they want and expect because every fan around the world have high expectations of their team to play their best attacking football and win, always!!!! If you were to compare all the coaches in the EPL, Sir Alex would be the top because of his winning record and always pushing the players to go forward to attack, followed by Pep, Klopp, Mourinho and others!!!!! The English fans expect to win always because the clubs have been winning both domestic and european trophies so they expect England to win trophies too, they have produced some of the best players in the world then, now and in the future!!!!!

  17. Don't always agree with Goldstein, but he nailed it here. Too many sentimentality merchants in this country. All these years later and right till the dude left, we heard "united the nation and made us believe". Yeah well done. De La Fuente came in after Qatar and has already won something. Lost vs the first team that was as good or better than them in his 4 tournaments but there is an expectation that this dude's backside is kissed. ๐Ÿ˜‚

    8.5? 7 would be generous.
