James Milner blasts VAR ‘shambles’ at World Cup after more controversy

There was more controversy on Monday night when VAR was used to award Iran a penalty against Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo avoided a red card after catching Morteza Pouraliganji on the chin with his arm. England benefitted from VAR against Panama on Sunday, but missed out on two obvious penalties six days earlier in the 2-1 victory over Tunisia. VAR seemed to cause referee Enrique Caceres problems during Portugal’s draw with Iran Liverpool’s James Milner has branded the system in use at the World Cup as a ‘shambles’And Milner, who represented the Three Lions between 2009 and 2016, believes the system – at least in its current form – should be scrapped.
