Hey there true blue subscribers and a warm welcome to a new update from true blue football news.
Chelsea are intensifying their pursuit of Ajax’s teenage sensation Jorrel Hato, as the club looks to further reinforce their defence with one of Europe’s most exciting prospects. At just 18 years old, Hato has already become a regular starter for Ajax, amassing over 40 first-team appearances and earning six senior caps for the Netherlands. Comfortable at both centre-back and left-back, he’s known for his intelligent positioning, sharp passing and remarkable composure for someone so young. He made history earlier this season by captaining Ajax in the Europa League at just 17 years and 282 days old — becoming the youngest European captain in the club’s history.
His numbers this season underline why the big clubs are circling. Hato has made 28 Eredivisie appearances, starting 27 of them, and has racked up over 2,300 minutes on the pitch. He’s scored twice, registered six assists, and has a pass completion rate of nearly 90%. His expected assists per 90 sits at 0.26 — incredibly high for a defender — and he averages more than half a key pass per game, showing he’s just as much a weapon in possession as he is without it.
Chelsea’s interest fits their ongoing strategy of signing elite youth talent early, before prices skyrocket. Hato’s ability to play out from the back would suit Enzo Maresca’s possession-based system perfectly, and with question marks hanging over the futures of Benoît Badiashile and Axel Disasi, he could be a timely addition. The Blues are reported to have sent scouts to several Ajax games and are one of a few clubs pushing hardest behind the scenes.
While Ajax are publicly keen to keep hold of him, the Dutch side are not in the strongest financial position and could be tempted by an offer in the region of 40 to 45 million pounds. Hato himself has stated he’s happy in Amsterdam for now, but also didn’t close the door on a move if the timing and club are right.
Arsenal had previously been linked but have cooled their interest, leaving Chelsea to battle Real Madrid, who are also watching developments closely. If Chelsea can land Hato, they’ll be getting not just one of the most polished young defenders in Europe, but a player with the potential to lead their backline for a decade.
